After studying classical guitar at Webster university I had made the sudden change to start a blues band out of college. This was in large part due to being turned on to T-Bone Walker, by my friend and former roommate in college, Matt Lesch, blues guitar virtuoso. This introduction to the blues, Chicago blues, in particular changed the course of my musical life, as I have spent the following five years dedicating myself to playing this style of music.
Saint Louis has a strong blues scene. Something I believe many people aren’t aware of as I was once one of them. If it wasn’t for the guidance and support of local blues musicians I wouldn’t be anywhere near as motivated or inspired. I’ve learned most of what I know from sitting in with experienced players and adapting on the spot. Texas bluesman John McVey kindly took me under his wing and taught me how to approach solos and rhythm playing. Fundamentals I use every time I play the blues.
