Good Friday Blues – 2013

GOOD FRIDAY BLUES

Christ Church Cathedral

Friday March 29, 2013

Very Rev. Mike Kinman -

"Good Friday is when deep love meets deep pain.

Good Friday is when pretending doesn’t work anymore and all that’s left is who we really are. Good Friday is honest and raw and real.

Good Friday is the blues."

“We want people to experience the depth of the passion through music that really is its equal in depth,’’ he said. “It’s the perfect St. Louis thing to do because we have such a rich tradition of the blues here. This really is St. Louis’ music.’’

“Good Friday Blues is a unique partnership of Christ Church Cathedral, the National Blues Museum and Magdalene St. Louis to bring people together on this holiest of Christian days to share and promote outstanding blues music and to help bring deep love to women whose lives have been nothing but deep pain. From 7-9 pm on Friday, March 29, the sounds of Kingdom Brothers, Matthew Lesch, Beth Tuttle and others will sound out from the foot of the cross in the Christ Church Cathedral Nave. A free will offering will be taken benefitting the National Blues Museum (www.nationalbluesmuseum.org) and Magdalene St. Louis (www.magdalenestl.org), a two-year residential community for women recovering from prostitution, violence and drug abuse, set to open in St. Louis in 2014.”

CHRIS SHEPHERD
"Blues and gospel music meet at the crossroads of hard times and suffering, and hope and faith. They are expressions of the fact that to love can be painful, and to have hope in suffering can lead to joyfulness. I think that is Good Friday."

“This is the second year for Good Friday Blues, a concept Kinman developed with Dave Beardsley who is working to open a National Blues Museum in the city. Performers include Eliza Lynn, Beth Tuttle, Kingdom Brothers and Matt Lesch.”

MATT 'THE RATTLESNAKE' LESCH
"I was very fortunate to have been a part of this amazing event and to help raise money for a great organization. An event I will never forget!”

BETH TUTTLE
“The feeling in the church was solemnity. There was celebration. There was community because blues really brings people together."

STANLEY GILL
“This event gave us the opportunity to express our love for God through the gift of music He gave us. This was one of the first events that helped establish Kingdom Brothers as a powerful new entry on the St. Louis blues music scene.”

RON ROSKOWSKE
“I was happy to participate in this concert-we were able to bring forth the true meaning of Good Friday in both scripture and song."

BOB WALTHER
“Very fulfilling not only to be involved in raising money for a great charitable organization but also to celebrate one of the holiest days on the religious calendar.’"
